attackfanzine.net - 1997-2010

As of May 1 there will be no more, or very little, activity here on attackfanzine.net

This is not an easy decision to make seeing as this site has been a big part of my life for a long time, but it's a decision I've been pondering over for a couple of years. I also feel that this comes through in the quality of content which I think is lower than what I can expect, and demand, from myself.

13 years is a long time. I launched the first version of this site in 1997 when I was 17 years old and it has been a part of my entire adult life - but everything must come to an end. The energy and enthusiasm for this site has left me and what once was extremely fun to do has now turned into have to do, and when the choice stands between doing something half-hearted or not do it at all I strongly believe it's time to pull the plug.

It's not impossible that I will regret this decision eventually and that the site will come to life once again, but don't count on it in a near future. And if it in fact does get revived it'll probably be in the form of a blog or something similar that's a little more laid back. I have also played with the idea of doing it all in Swedish instead, so that's also an option further down the road. Time will tell what happens.

I will in no way leave to wonderful world of hardcore punk, but for now I will direct all my attention towards Blindead Productions and the Blindead Mailorder. I will also devote a lot more time to graphic design and layout, something that has been forced to take the back seat far too often lately.

The site will still be available for some time though, so if you enjoy coming here and read the occasional older review there's no need to worry.

Those of you that wait on a review of your sent in stuff shouldn't be too worried though, I will get around to it before I call it quits. Maybe not in the form of a proper review, but I will post my comments here on the site.

Thank you for visiting this site, all the comments, and for all the stuff you have sent me for review.

That's it for now, feel free to contact me if you feel like it and don’t stop sending me news from the hardcore punk world.

/Krogh

ADRENICIDE Kill CD
Endless Brutality of Men Records

A site for self development for the post modern hippie discusses the concept of when “enough is enough”: “Enough can describe quantity or quality, depending on the subject or object”. Adrenicide released “Kill” last year as their fourth album in three years, and to top it off, the released yet another full length last year. To put it bluntly, on this release they clearly excel in quantity, and fail miserably in terms of quality.

VON BØØM Punkrockterrorists CD
F.D.A. Rekotz

I was pretty impressed with the material Von Bøøm presented on their split with Motorbreath and any fears of a band that returns after two decades and completely ruin any heritage was soon washed away. What this means is that I approach this CD in a different manner as I already know they can deliver, so this time I expect quality instead of just hope they won’t loose their dignity...

ASSASSINATORS/D.S.B. split 7”
Alerta Antifascista/Halo of Flies Records

At first look this might seem as an odd pairing of bands, and I agree. I still think it’s somewhat strange, but that doesn’t stop it from being two good bands for the price of one so it’s really a good deal.

Danish Assassinators continue to deliver the melodic punk they’ve proven to be very good at in the past.

TERRORSTAT/TWISTED SYSTEM split CD
Endless Brutality of Men

Eighteen tracks in thirty-six minutes and a Swedish - American crustcore team-up with two bands that I think would have benefited from doing separate releases.

When a bands’ style is described as raw, rampant crustcore with a couple of heavy mid-tempo breakdowns it could just as well be a way of tip-toeing around the fact that they don’t have so much to offer as it could mean...

Last minute entry
This is most likely the last entry here on the site, and it’s in the very last minute, about a record I haven’t given too many minutes of attention. Not because it’s bad, just because of lack of time. Anyway, the band is Critical Convictions and their 7” The Crisis of Modernity.

There’s at least one guy in here that used to be in Take One for the Team and there are some similarities with both bands doing fast thrashy hardcore. Check out their MySpace site for more info and some tunes.

Guttural grunting and breakneck speeds
When I mention Repulsion all the grinders’ tentacles are picking it up and head this way, therefore I see no real reason to deeper analyze this Tribute to Repulsion CD than to state the fact that it’s a quality tribute where most of the fillers have been cleared out.

If you like grind in general, and Repulsion in particular, you’ll go apeshit over this twenty-two track tribute that includes names such as General Surgery, Birdflesh, Coldworker, Afgrund, World Downfall, Haemorrhage, Looking for an Answer, Inhume… and another fourteen bands.

Comes packed in cool artwork, info on the band and recently written liner notes.

Drink up ya sinners
I’m well aware that any narrow-mindedness might shine through far too much here but when I got this self titled disc with Sir Reg from Anarkopunx Records I wasn’t prepared for what it had in store. Normally that label goes hand in hand with hardcore, but this time it was eight tracks of Irish folk punk by members spread out over Sweden and Ireland. Complete with violins and all that comes with this style.

There’s something about the tempo of Irish folk music that makes it quite impossible to not start stomping my feet, but if this means that I like it is a whole other matter. Cheerful and bouncy and not really my cup of whiskey, although I guess it could be after a few shots of said beverage – especially the “Drink up ya sinners” track.

Polarbears and råpunk
Just a couple of days before I flick the switch Johan of Rawby Records and Slaktrens sent me his latest offering, the Ur Balans 7” so it’s just in time to get a post here on the site. After listening to this 15-track 7”, at 45 rpm I must add, I guess I would’ve made an exception and posted something about it even if it hadn’t arrived until next week ‘cause I believe the world needs to know about this.

I liked the demo, but this is definitely a step up and it’s nothing short of a råpunk explosion – simple, raw and fucking intense, but not without some really catchy riffs.

I’ve only just gotten it and haven’t played it too many times so I won’t use too big words, but I have a feeling I, and all other råpunk lovers, will play this piece of vinyl a lot. I should be getting copies for the Blindead Mailorder soon.

Better late than never
It’s been a while now since I got the Dr.Tobehoktr 7” with Unhaim and I should have reviewed it a long time ago, but the fact that I haven't done so only confirms that it's the right decision to halt the activity here on the site. Still, my apologies to the band and labels.

This Swiss band plays quite intense crustcore that has some black metal tendencies in a handful of riffs, and there are also some neo-crust-ish riffs implemented. It’s mainly the tracks on the B-side that has the metal while the tracks on the A-side sort of lands somewhere in between Warvictims and Warcollapse.

The band has no MySpace or website so you’ll simply have to track this 7” with its cool screenprinted glow-in-the dark sleeve down to hear it.

5 years of screamo
A little of three years ago I reviewed a self titled CD from French Sofy Major and I wasn’t very impressed. Now the band is celebrating a five-year anniversary and has released the CD 5 Years of Freaks that has assorted tracks from their outputs during this time.

Unfortunately in my opinion they haven’t changed their style much and I still don’t care much for their screamo, but maybe you do?

Hammer time
I have no idea why, but for some reason I thought this self titled demo-CD from Insidious Process would contain some odd arty rock stuff. The only explanation I can come up with for this mistake is that I got them confused with another band with a similar name that I can’t remember right now ‘cause this shit is brutal!

This Göteborg band delivers eight tracks, including an outro, of raw and rumbling crustcore with venomous female vocals. It’s hard and loud and there are no epic-metallic-melodic stuff going on, just brute force - this lot will run you over, conscious clean. Save a spot for this logo next to the ENT patch on your jacket or pants.

Great fold-out packaging too!

Split personality
The strive to stand out from the crowd can be good, but it can also feel extremely unnatural – German band Jack Slater has definitely dug themselves far too deep into the latter category on their Extinction Aftermath CD. They play a style of technical death metal that I find to be far too schizophrenic and odd. Lots of tempo changes and I even think I heard a slap bass in there somewhere?

I don’t know the genre at all and this isn’t making me interested in getting to know it either.

Angermannia Hard Punk
Alright, let’s clear this up from the very beginning – Total Aggression aren’t playing crust, despite the title on their self released CDEP Angermannia Crust. I would instead label this hard punk, with some melodies and some metal. This Swedish unit are presenting five tracks of heavy sounding and somewhat rough punk rock with semi-grunted vocals, not too unlike Kurt Olvars Rebeller or Barbaras Grannar, only better and darker. It’s been a long time since I listened to any of those bands though so I could be wrong. Check the site and judge for yourself.

The rebels return
The old Swedish band E.A.T.E.R. (Ernst And The Edsholm Rebels) has risen from the grave and will be playing this years Punk Illegal festival.
In time for the festival they will also release an LP/CD with material from 1983-87.
